Standalone Quickstart

Dremio standalone quickstarts are single node installation used for evaluation and testing purposes only.

Prerequisites

This section lists the available quickstart platforms, required JDK version, and preferred browser.

Platforms

Quickstart Platforms Requirements
MacOS MacOS 10.12+

Note that Dremio MacOS app is pre-configured to use a maximum 2GB of heap memory and 4GB of direct memory.
Windows Windows 7+. AVX2 instruction set support is required.
Linux RHEL and CentOS 6.7+ and 7.3+

Java Development Kit

The 64-bit Java Development Kit version 1.8 is required.

  1. Check to see if your instance has Java installed (and which version) through your System Preferences panel.
  2. Download the latest version of Java SE.

Browsers

The Dremio UI works best with the following browsers:

  • Google Chrome 54+
  • Apple Safari 11+ (experimental)
  • Mozilla Firefox 50+
    Microsoft Edge 14+
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 11+ |

MacOS

Dremio's MacOS Quickstart deploys Dremio on your MacOS machine using the Dremio MacOS installer. This is for testing purposes only. The Dremio MacOS installer supports MacOS 10.12+.

Installing and Starting Up

  1. Install Dremio for Mac using the .dmg package.
  2. Launch Dremio from Applications. This automatically starts Dremio.
  3. You can now navigate to the Dremio UI at http://localhost:9047.

Shutting down this application automatically stops Dremio.

Upgrading

Before Upgrading
While Dremio is still running, create a backup of your Dremio cluster. On Mac installations, the dremio-admin utility is used for backups. This utility is located under the /Applications/Dremio.app/Contents/Java/dremio/bin directory.

To perform an upgrade:

  1. Shut down the Dremio App.
  2. Make a copy of the Dremio data located under the /Users/<user_name>/Library/Dremio directory.
  3. Run installer for the new version of Dremio.
  4. Start the Dremio Application. This automatically triggers an upgrade workflow. This might take more than a few minutes depending on your environment and usage.

Windows

Dremio's Windows Quickstart deploys Dremio on your Windows machine using the Dremio Windows installer. This is for testing purposes only. The Dremio Windows installer supports Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Installing and Starting Up

  1. Install Dremio using the installer.
  2. Start Dremio from the Start Menu.
  3. You can now navigate to the Dremio UI at http://localhost:9047.

Upgrading

Before Upgrading
While Dremio is still running, make a copy of all folders located under C:\Users<USER_NAME>\AppData\Local\Dremio. On Windows, Dremio is configured to look for this path for metadata by default.

[info] On Windows installations, the dremio-admin utility is not available for backing up Dremio.

Linux

Dremio's Linux Quickstart deploys Dremio on a RHEL or CentOS machine using the Dremio Linux RPM installer. This is for testing purposes only. The Dremio Linux RPM installer supports RHEL and CentOS 6.7+ and 7.3+.

Installing and Starting Up

  1. Install Dremio using:
     sudo yum localinstall dremio-<VERSION>.rpm
    
  2. Start Dremio:
     sudo service dremio start
    
  3. You can now navigate to the Dremio UI at http://localhost:9047.

Optionally, when running Dremio on a single laptop/machine that may experience network or IP changes, the following line can be added to dremio.conf under /etc/dremio/ to allow Dremio to keep working:

registration.publish-host: "localhost"
